Alert level raised as Philippine volcano spews ash and steam


Ash emerging from the crater of the Taal Volcano on Sunday (Jan 12). The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level in Taal to two, meaning "there is probable magmatic intrusion that may or may not lead to eruption." - PI/ANN

MANILA: A volcano just south of the Philippine capital spewed ash and steam reaching 100m high in the air on Sunday (Jan 12), prompting authorities to raise its alert level.

The phreatic explosion was preceded by steaming activity in other parts of Taal Volcano in Batangas province, 66km south of Manila.
