Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for five states until 3pm

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across five states, effective until 3pm on Sunday (Nov 8).

In Peninsular Malaysia, the afternoon weather alert covers Temerloh, Pulau Tioman, Bera and Rompin in Pahang. In Negeri Sembilan, storms are expected in Jempol, Tampin, Seremban, Rembau and Kuala Pilah, while the warning affects the entire state of Melaka and Johor.

Over in East Malaysia, severe weather is forecast across several divisions in Sabah, including Kudat and the entire Pantai Barat division. Affected areas also include Pedalaman (Keningau, Pensiangan, Tambunan and Sook), Sandakan (Paitan, Labuk & Sugut, Sandakan, Tongod and Telupid), alongside Kalabakan and Tawau in Tawau.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at noon on Sunday.
