Heavy rain, strong winds cause ceiling leaks at Seberang Jaya hospital

BUTTERWORTH: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds caused ceiling leaks and rainwater to enter several buildings, particularly older blocks, at Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) here on Saturday (Nov 7) night.

Penang Health Director Dr Zulhizzam Abdullah said the incident occurred during unusually heavy rainfall and strong winds, which caused rainwater to overflow and seep into several areas of the hospital.

"Most of the affected areas were in the hospital’s older blocks, although some newer buildings also experienced similar problems.

"This was an unexpected incident due to the extremely heavy rain, strong winds and large volume of runoff, which caused leaks and rainwater to enter several areas.

"However, no patients were affected and there were no adverse consequences arising from the incident,” he told Bernama when contacted on Sunday (Nov 8).

Dr Zulhizzam said HSJ’s Engineering and Maintenance Management Department was taking steps to address the problem.

Earlier, several videos went viral showing healthcare workers using umbrellas inside the hospital building after heavy rain caused ceiling leaks, while water covered parts of the floor. - Bernama
