SOME 210 boxes of contraband cigarettes worth RM1.8mil and 208 cryptocurrency mining machines have been disposed of by police following the completion of legal proceedings and court orders, Kosmo! reported.
Gua Musang OCPD Supt Sik Choon Foo said the seizures were made during operations conducted between 2021 and 2023.
He said the confiscated bitcoin mining machines would be handed over to an electronic waste management company for disposal, while the cigarettes would be buried at the Gua Musang District Council’s landfill.
“The bitcoin mining machines were seized through joint operations by the police and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB). They were found at several locations, including abandoned buildings in residential areas believed to have been used by syndicates as illegal bitcoin mining centres.
“The police will continue working with TNB to detect illegal cryptocurrency mining activities, which not only cause losses to the utility company but also result in losses to the country through the unauthorised consumption of electricity,” he said.
Supt Sik said both cases were investigated under Sections 379 and 427 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
