MELAKA: Former DAP assemblyman Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee, popularly known as “YB Hulk”, will make another bid for Pengkalan Batu, this time as a Bersatu candidate in the Melaka polls.

Norhizam is among eight candidates announced by Bersatu vice-president Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin at an event in Klebang here yesterday.

Bersatu will also contest in Lendu, Gadek, Sungai Udang, Pantai Kundor, Klebang, Ayer Keroh and Bemban.

Norhizam previously contested Pengkalan Batu as an Independent in the November 2021 state election, but failed to retain the seat.

Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Kalsom Noordin won the five-cornered contest with a slim majority of 131 votes.

Norhizam earned the nickname YB Hulk after a video of him engaged in a heated exchange with villagers in Bukit Beruang went viral in 2018.

He served as a state executive councillor under the Pakatan Harapan-led government from 2018 to 2020.

In March 2020, the Pakatan administration collapsed, paving the way for a Barisan-Perikatan Nasional-led state government.

Norhizam subsequently left DAP and became an Independent.

On Oct 4, 2021, he and three other assemblymen withdrew their support for the state government, triggering its collapse before state election was held in November the same year when Barisan won 21 of the 28 seats.

At press time, Perikatan had yet to unveil its candidate list.
