KULAI: An estimated RM2.5mil is needed to repair a landslide-hit road in Indahpura here, says Johor executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.
He said the affected stretch of about 70m requires urgent repair works to prevent further soil movement and damage to the surrounding area.
"The affected stretch is about 70m long, but we are looking at extending the repair works to more than 100m as we have also noticed cracks developing in nearby areas.
"The first thing we need to do is install sheet piles to prevent further soil movement and stabilise the area.
"Based on my experience, delaying such works could worsen the damage and significantly increase repair costs," he told reporters during a site visit in Kulai on Friday (Oct 30).
Mohd Jafni said the relevant concessionaire had been instructed to prioritise the installation of sheet piles as an immediate measure to prevent the situation from worsening.
"Once the sheet piles are installed, we will need to look at the structural design and other works required to ensure the area is safe.
"At the same time, we are working on securing the necessary allocation to carry out the repairs as soon as possible," he said.
Mohd Jafni said an application for emergency funding of between RM2mil and RM2.5mil would be submitted through the Kulai District Disaster Management Committee chairman for consideration under the Johor Disaster Fund.
On Oct 29, part of Jalan Persiaran Indahpura 36/2 collapsed following heavy rain, prompting the Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) to close the road to traffic.
MPKu councillor and traffic committee deputy chief Darren Tan said council personnel were dispatched to carry out emergency precautionary measures, including closing the entire stretch to ensure road users' safety.
He added that the council also planned to cover the collapsed area with a tarpaulin to prevent the situation from worsening.
