MBPP closes five business premises operated by foreigners

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) shut down five business premises on Jalan Baru, Batu Maung, and seized equipment during its recent Ops Tegas enforcement operation.

The premises are believed to have been operated by foreign nationals.

In a statement on Thursday (Oct 15), MBPP said the operation was launched following intelligence and information regarding businesses including a grocery store, eateries, and a barbershop operated by foreign nationals.

"Inspections revealed that these premises employed foreign workers. In one instance, a foreign national failed to produce identification documents before fleeing the premises.

"The inspections also uncovered the processing of raw chicken and fish within the premises.

"Furthermore, one premises which housed a barbershop was found to have a passageway leading to living quarters and a food preparation area," the statement read.

MBPP said the seizure of business equipment and the closure of all five premises were carried out in accordance with the Local Government Act 1976. – Bernama
