University student dies after falling from George Town hostel

GEORGE TOWN: A female university student died after allegedly falling from a building in the hostel block of a higher education institute in Jalan Bukit Gambir, Gelugor here on Thursday (Oct 15).

Timur Laut OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the police received a phone call from the university at 8.40am informing them of the discovery of the body of a 21-year-old female student residing in the dormitory.

The student's body was found at 7.25am by the university's cleaning staff.

She was found lying on her back on the cement floor below the dormitory block. The student, suspected of having fallen from the building, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Investigations at the scene found no signs of criminal elements, and further examination of the victim's body revealed several external injuries suspected to have been caused by a fall from a height," he said in a statement.

The victim's body has been sent to Penang Hospital for an autopsy, and a sudden death report (LMM) has been opened to investigate the case.
