PETALING JAYA: The Immigration Department is maintaining continuous enforcement operations in Janda Baik, Pahang, following rising concerns among local residents regarding illegal foreign workers, says its director-general.
Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the department took note of recent media reports on the issue, highlighting that the latest large-scale crackdown in the area took place on April 24, covering eight separate locations.
"During that operation, 82 individuals were inspected, resulting in the detention of 38 foreign nationals suspected of committing various immigration offences," Zakaria said in a statement on Monday (Oct 12).
He assured the public that enforcement efforts would persist through stepped-up monitoring, intelligence gathering, and targeted operations based on verified complaints.
Zakaria acknowledged that the demand for foreign labour in Janda Baik is largely driven by local economic activities and employment opportunities, particularly within agriculture, retail, and the thriving tourism sector, which includes resorts, chalets, and lodges.
However, he cautioned that these commercial sectors can sometimes pave the way for illegal employment and unauthorised housing accommodations.
"These circumstances may create opportunities for the illegal hiring of foreign nationals and the provision of accommodation that violates immigration laws," he explained.
To address the issue comprehensively, Zakaria noted that the department is strengthening strategic partnerships with local councils and relevant enforcement bodies through joint operations and information sharing.
He also commended local residents and residents' associations for acting as the department’s eyes and ears by reporting suspicious activities.
"Accurate information from the public helps us verify reports and take swift action without placing citizens at risk," Zakaria said, reiterating that continuous monitoring will remain in place to uphold immigration laws across Janda Baik.
