Single mother charged with exposing daughter to sexual abuse

KUALA LUMPUR: A 32-year-old single mother has been charged in the Sessions Court with exposing her 15-year-old daughter to sexual abuse.

The woman pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before Judge Dr Azrol Abdullah on Monday (Oct 12).

According to the charge, the woman, who had custody of her daughter, allegedly exposed the teenager to circumstances that could cause or allow her to be sexually abused.

The offence was allegedly committed at a residence in Taman Yarl here between Sept 1 and Oct 5.

She was charged under Section 31(1)(b) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM20,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Hench Goh proposed bail of RM10,000, while defence lawyer Leo Yap sought a lower amount, citing his client's irregular income as a single mother working in event management.

"My client also suffers from cervical cancer and requires ongoing treatment, which involves medical expenses. She has also cooperated fully with the investigation," he said. The court granted bail of RM10,000 with one surety and fixed Dec 3 for re-mention. – Bernama
