PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across 12 states and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, effective until 6pm on Saturday (Oct 10).
In Peninsular Malaysia, the afternoon weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka. In Kedah, storms are expected in Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Sik and Baling, while Penang is affected in Timor Laut and Barat Daya.
In Perak, severe weather is forecast for Larut Matang, Kerian, Selama, Manjung, Bagan Datuk, Perak Tengah, Hilir Perak and Hulu Perak. Kelantan is affected in Kuala Krai and Jeli, while Pahang covers Rompin and Jerantut.
In the central and southern regions, the warning affects Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Petaling and Hulu Langat in Selangor, as well as the entire area of WP Kuala Lumpur. In Johor, affected districts include Kulai and Johor Bahru.
Over in East Malaysia, the alert covers Lubok Antu in Sri Aman, Sarawak. In Sabah, severe weather is expected in Tawau (Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu), Sandakan (Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Telupid, Labuk & Sugut and Paitan), Pantai Barat (Kota Belud and Ranau), and Kota Marudu in Kudat.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 1.45pm on Saturday.
