SEPANG: The KLIA Aerotrain will undergo a scheduled software upgrade after successfully completing 20,000 continuous operational hours, aimed at further strengthening the system’s operational robustness and supporting its long-term performance.

The upgrade will be implemented in two phases, with Aerotrain services temporarily suspended during off-peak standard engineering hours, from midnight to 5am, while the works are carried out.

KLIA chief operating officer Adam Nicholas Wilson said that since the completion of the Comprehensive Action Plan in June 2026, the Aerotrain system has maintained an availability rate of 99.9 per cent.

"Over the past 1.5 years, it has completed 167,481 return trips and carried approximately 23.55 million passengers," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 7).

The first phase, field testing from Oct 8 to 17, will involve installing and testing the software update under actual operating conditions to verify its performance and functionality.

The field testing and independent safety assessment provide an additional layer of verification before the updated software is permanently deployed.

The results will then undergo a comprehensive independent safety assessment.

Subject to these assessments, the update will proceed to the Roll Out phase from Nov 28 to Dec 1, when it will be permanently deployed on the Aerotrain system.

To ensure continuity of passenger transfers between the Main Terminal and Satellite Building, he said a full bussing service will be deployed throughout the exercise periods as part of the airport’s operational contingency arrangements.

"Our priority is to ensure that the Aerotrain continues to provide a reliable and smooth service for passengers at KLIA. Planned activities such as this software update are part of our ongoing efforts to maintain this level of performance and support the system’s reliability over the longer term," he added.

During the engineering hours, passengers are advised to follow the designated signage to the bus lounge, where transfer buses will be available, or approach KLIA ground staff for assistance. - Bernama
