PETALING JAYA: The Armed Forces has confirmed that all weapons and ammunition in its armouries are fully accounted for following the arrest of a military officer at a public university last week.
The military strategic communications branch said immediate inspections of all weapons and ammunition stores were conducted after it received information about the incident.
“Police arrested the officer to assist in investigations after finding him in possession of a firearm, ammunition and a liquid suspected to contain illicit substances.
“An initial urine screening test on the officer returned positive for mitragynine. However, the result is subject to further confirmation through laboratory analysis and the outcome of investigations by the authorities,” it said in a statement yesterday.
Mitragynine is the primary psychoactive compound found in ketum.
The military said it viewed seriously any incident involving its personnel, particularly those relating to discipline, security and compliance with regulations.
It also reiterated its commitment to fully cooperate with the authorities and take appropriate action if any breach of regulations was established following the investigation.
“Any conclusions regarding the incident must be based on facts and the findings of the authorities’ investigations, rather than unverified information.
“We also urge the public not to speculate or spread information that could mislead the public or jeopardise the investigation,” it said.
The Armed Forces said further updates would be communicated through its official channels in due course.
Meanwhile, viral social media posts claimed the officer had caused a commotion on campus before security personnel detained him on Sept 28.
According to the post, security personnel contacted military authorities after locating the man.
The post also claimed that an initial inspection found bottles containing liquid suspected to be ketum water, along with a bag containing a firearm and ammunition.
