Arms and ammunition stores intact despite officer's arrest, says armed forces


PETALING JAYA: The armed forces has confirmed that all its arms and ammunition stores are complete, with no losses recorded, following the arrest of an officer found with a firearm, ammunition and suspected illicit substances.

The armed forces said immediate inspections were carried out at all arms and ammunition stores upon receiving information about the incident.

"The officer was arrested at a public institution of higher learning on Sept 28 and is currently in police custody to assist in investigations," it said in a statement.

"An initial urine screening found the officer positive for mitragynine, a compound found in kratom. However, the result is subject to further laboratory confirmation and the outcome of investigations by the authorities," it added.

The armed forces said it took all matters involving its personnel seriously, particularly those concerning discipline, security and compliance with regulations.

It added that it would extend full cooperation to the authorities and take appropriate action if any breach of regulations was established following the investigations.

The armed forces also stressed that any conclusions about the case should be based on verified facts and the findings of the authorities.

It urged the public not to speculate or circulate unverified information that could mislead the public or compromise the investigation.

Further developments will be communicated through official armed forces channels in due course.
