Raids on KL gambling call centres lead to 46 arrests


KUALA LUMPUR: Police swept the city in nine raids and arrested 46 foreigners in a crackdown on gambling call centres on Thursday (Oct 1) and Friday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspects, when questioned, had admitted their involvement in organising online gambling activities for clients from China, South Korea and the Philippines.

“They had been actively involved in the activities for between one and three months, receiving an average monthly salary of between RM2,000 and RM3,500,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Eleven suspects have since been remanded for three days, with a further 22 being remanded for four days. A total of 12 suspects have been remanded for 14 days.

The arrested also face charges under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“Police also seized 24 laptops, 71 mobile phones of various types, 10 Wi-Fi modems, five computer mice, three sets of keys, 12 monitors, three access cards, one router, four laptops, three keyboards, five chargers and RM23,000 in cash,” he said.

“The police advise all members of the public to stay away from all forms of gambling activities and to remain vigilant against scams employing call-centre type behaviours,” Comm Fadil said.
