Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for seven states until 5pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across seven states, effective until 5pm on Thursday (Oct 1).

In Peninsular Malaysia, the weather alert covers Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Kinta in Perak; Kuala Krai in Kelantan; and Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Setiu and Kemaman in Terengganu. In Pahang, storms are expected in Jerantut, Kuantan, Lipis, Cameron Highlands and Maran, while Johor is affected in Johor Bahru, Pontian, Kulai, Mersing and Segamat.

Over in East Malaysia, severe weather is forecast across multiple divisions in Sarawak, including Sibu, Bintulu, Betong, Samarahan, Sarikei, Mukah, Lingga, Pantu and Sri Aman in Sri Aman, Song and Kapit in Kapit, Lawas in Limbang, Subis in Miri, and Serian in Serian.

In Sabah, the alert covers Pedalaman (Beaufort, Membakut, Sipitang, Tambunan, Keningau, Tenom and Kuala Penyu) and Pantai Barat (Papar, Penampang, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Kota Kinabalu and Putatan).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 1.35pm on Thursday.
