PUTRAJAYA: Nearly one million applications have been received under the Inland Revenue Board’s (LHDN) voluntary disclosure programme for stamp duty, says its chief executive officer Datuk Dr Abu Tariq Jamaluddin.
He said the board would continue promoting the programme throughout October, particularly to taxpayers with documents that may not have been stamped previously.
“Nearly one million have come forward to apply for the stamp duty voluntary disclosure programme,” he told reporters after launching Bulan Hasil 2026 at IOI City Mall here on Thursday (Oct 1).
Abu Tariq said documents that may not have been stamped previously should be brought forward during the voluntary disclosure period so that the relevant stamp duty could be settled.
He said such documents could include tenancy agreements, loan agreements and other transaction documents.
Abu Tariq said the move was particularly relevant as the board had begun implementing the self-assessment system for stamp duty in phases this year.
“With the move to self-assessment, the board’s role will be to conduct checks or audits. So before they are discovered by the board, we encourage taxpayers to come forward first and have the relevant documents assessed for stamp duty,” he said.
The stamp-duty programme is one of three voluntary compliance initiatives being highlighted under Bulan Hasil 2026, alongside the PKPS e-Invoice and the income tax voluntary disclosure campaign.
Abu Tariq said the broader message was for taxpayers who realised that mistakes had been made to correct their tax position voluntarily rather than remain silent.
“Do not see a mistake as a reason to remain silent. If we realise there is something that needs to be corrected, take the opportunity provided, come forward, get guidance and take the necessary action,” he said.
He also urged the public to help the board identify possible tax non-compliance through its e-Pelarian Cukai online platform.
He said members of the public with true and accurate information about individuals or entities that may be evading tax could submit the information online, with the confidentiality of informants taken into account.
“We cannot deal with every form of non-compliance without the cooperation of the public,” he said.
The e-Pelarian Cukai initiative forms part of the board’s wider effort to encourage the public to play a role in strengthening tax compliance, as board’s officers engage in outreach programmes in conjunction with Bulan Hasil 2026 to be closer to communities nationwide.
