PETALING JAYA: The suspension of all Perikatan Nasional activities by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) will not affect the coalition’s negotiations with Barisan Nasional ahead of the Melaka state election.
Perikatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said talks with Barisan were ongoing and that developments involving the ROS had not changed Perikatan’s position on the proposed political cooperation.
He said the negotiations remained on track, in line with the call by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang for the “unity of the ummah”.
“I can confirm that this will not affect the negotiations on cooperation, as stated by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who emphasised the unity of the ummah.
“The unity of the ummah, or unity among the Malay-Muslim community, has already been accepted by the majority of Malaysians, including non-Malays,” he said, as reported by Sinar Harian.
The ROS said the suspension followed a complaint lodged by Bersatu.
Takiyuddin said political stability was also important for the economy, as a stable political environment was necessary to ensure that economic activities could continue smoothly.
On the current stage of negotiations with Barisan, he said discussions had yet to be finalised but had passed the halfway mark.
He also denied reports or claims that Perikatan had already been allocated seven seats to contest in the Melaka state election.
“That has not been decided yet and is still being negotiated. But things are positive and we are optimistic that we can carry out the agenda of unity of the ummah in Melaka,” he said.
