KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 2,500 compound notices have been issued since July to employers and platform providers failing to register with or contribute to the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO).
Deputy chief executive (Operations) Azirruan Arifin said 2,457 notices were served after enforcement officers inspected 9,809 premises nationwide.
The compounds, which amounted to RM1.56mil, involved offences under the Employees’ Social Security Act, Employment Insurance Act and Self-Employment Social Security Act.
He added that under Op Kesan 2.0 yesterday, some 1,923 inspections were carried out nationwide, resulting in 309 compound notices issued for related offences as of 5.30pm yesterday.
Operations in the Klang Valley centred on Pasar Seni, Brickfields, Pudu and Bandar Baru Ampang.
“Among the most common excuses given were that employers did not know contributions were mandatory.
“There were also cases where employees requested their employers not to make contributions,” he said on the sidelines of the operation here yesterday.
Some 300 officers from 54 PERKESO offices nationwide were involved in the operation which targeted employers, platform providers and self-employed workers, among others.
Since 2020, he said 25,011 compound notices amounting to RM15mil have also been issued against employers for failing to register their businesses or employees with PERKESO.
Some 21,177 cases have also been charged in court for various offences during the same period.
Under current legislation, non-compliant employers can be fined up to RM10,000 or face two years in jail, or both.
Azirruan stressed that workplace accidents or unexpected events can happen anytime, making social security protection essential.
“These benefits safeguard both workers and their families,” he said. “Employees must know their rights and insist on social security coverage.”
He urged employees whose employers fail to make contributions to lodge reports at nearby PERKESO offices.
“We will conduct site inspections to ensure workers receive their rightful coverage,” he said, adding that whistleblowers’ identities will remain strictly confidential.
PERKESO is also working with foreign embassies to enforce mandatory coverage for foreign workers.
On gig economy compliance, Azirruan reminded platform operators to register workers and remit contributions promptly.
While 1.17 million gig workers are already registered, full enforcement begins on Oct 1.
