JOHOR BARU: White shrimp farming has the potential to drive the growth of Johor’s aquaculture sector by increasing annual production to between 38,000 and 40,000 tonnes next year, says Md Israk Abdullah.
The state agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee chairman said Johor is currently the country’s leading producer of marine shrimp, contributing 25.27% of national production.
“Johor has great potential in shrimp farming, and we must continue to support and develop projects such as this,” he said yesterday.
Md Israk said this following a recent visit to a white shrimp farming project operated by the Johor Fishermen’s Association (Josfa) in Kampung Sungai Danga.
The project covers 1.64ha and comprises 11 tanks, including nine shrimp-rearing tanks and two water-treatment tanks.
Md Israk said the project demonstrated the potential of modern aquaculture methods in Johor, particularly in areas where such activities could benefit local communities. He said his visit allowed him to observe first-hand how white shrimp was being reared using a tank-based system.
He also took the opportunity to speak to the project operators to better understand the progress and challenges.
“Since beginning operations in September last year, the project has produced 13.5 tonnes of white shrimp.
“The produce was marketed around Johor Baru, providing fresh local seafood to consumers,” he said.
