KUALA LUMPUR: A mobile police station is scheduled to be stationed outside former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's residence in Jalan Langgak Duta at 7am on Monday (Sept 21) as part of security preparations for his possible transfer from prison.
Sentul OCPD ACP Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam said the deployment was aimed at managing security during Najib's possible return, including the presence of media, supporters and neighbours, as well as potential traffic congestion. However, he stressed that the mobile police station was not intended to guard Najib around the clock.
"It is not for 24-hour security for Najib. It is to manage security during his return, including the safety of media personnel, neighbours and supporters, particularly if there is traffic congestion," he said when contacted on Sunday (Sept 20).
"It is mainly for security during the process of transferring him from prison to the residence."
ACP Anuar said the mobile police station arrived at the residence earlier on Sunday due to a misunderstanding, but was later withdrawn and will be redeployed at 7am on Monday.
He said the usual deployment comprises a supervisor and two personnel, assisted by the Mobile Patrol Vehicle unit.
ACP Anuar said police had yet to confirm whether Najib would be brought to the residence on Monday to serve his house arrest. He also could not confirm whether the Jalan Langgak Duta residence had been designated as the location for Najib's house arrest.
"I cannot confirm this as I have not received any documents," he said, adding that the Jalan Langgak Duta premises is one of Najib's official residences under his jurisdiction.
ACP Anuar said the monitoring of Najib, should he serve his sentence under house arrest, was understood to fall under the Prisons Department, while police would facilitate his movement and ensure security during the process.
On Saturday (Sept 19), the residence drew attention following the arrival of several Prisons Department and police personnel. Their presence was believed to be linked to technical assessments and security checks of the premises before any decision on the designation of the residence is finalised.
The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department announced that Najib had been granted a conditional pardon by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50mil fine.
Najib, 73, has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and 12-year jail term in the SRC International case.
