KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who has been serving a prison sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, for misappropriating RM42mil in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds, has been allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
The following is the chronology of the case, Bernama reported.
Najib was charged for the first time on July 4, 2018. The case was subsequently transferred to the High Court.
On Aug 8, 2018, Najib was charged in the High Court with three counts of money laundering involving the same funds.
On Nov 11, 2019, the High Court ordered Najib to enter his defence against all seven charges, after finding that the prosecution succeeded in establishing elements of abuse of position, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering.
The High Court sentenced Najib on July 28, 2020 to 12 years’ imprisonment and a fine of RM210mil after finding him guilty of all seven charges.
On Aug 23, 2022, Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat upheld the conviction and the sentence.
On Sept 2, 2022, Najib filed a petition to seek a royal pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
On March 31, 2023, Najib failed in his final appeal at the Federal Court to review his conviction.
On Jan 29, 2024, the Pardons Board reduced Najib’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years and lowered the fine to RM50mil.
On Dec 22, 2025, High Court judge Justice Alice Loke dismissed the judicial review application regarding the addendum order alleged to allow Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
On Sept 11 this year, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, consented to deferring Najib’s pardon application to a future meeting of the Pardons Board.
Yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim granted a conditional pardon to Najib at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
