More reports lodged against Noorazli over priest joke

KOTA KINABALU: More police reports have been lodged against Sepang Umno chief Datuk Noorazli Said over a joke that offended Christians he shared at the Umno general assembly recently.

Tuaran MP Datuk Wildred Madius Tangau said that he lodged a report with the Kota Kinabalu police on Tuesday (Sept 15).

"I also received an apology from Noorazli," he said in a Facebook post.

Two Parti Warisan assemblymen, Samuel Wong (Luyang) and Edna Majimbun (Inanam) as well as party officials KC Chen and Melanie Chia lodged separate police reports at the Luyang police station here. Another report was lodged by its strategic communications director Christopher Masudal in Penampang.

Wong said he, as a Christian, was deeply offended, adding this was a disrespectful act.

Noorazli had apologised for making the joke.

"If my remarks have caused any misunderstanding or offended anyone, particularly the Christians, I humbly offer my apologies. I also take this as a lesson to be more careful in choosing analogies and expressing my views in the future," he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 14) night.

Among those who demanded an immediate apology was Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh who said religious matters should not be turned into a joke.

Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Arthur Kurup also called for an unconditional apology, saying it must be made without giving further reasons for the offensive and hurtful speech, particularly to Malaysian Christians.
