KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has warned its partners in the unity government against double-dealing, saying that there should be no agreements made in meetings only to be broken outside them.
In an apparent jab at Pakatan Harapan, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) said that just as a buffalo is bound by its rope, a person must be bound by his word.
“Do not build an understanding during the day, only to plot against your friends at night.
“Do not sign an agreement only to break it,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid said Barisan Nasional and its new allies were determined not to do so should they be given a mandate to rule Putrajaya.
“My colleagues and I would like to suggest that we build this grand coalition through mutual understanding, and take lessons from the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, which teaches us that victory is not about seeking revenge or punish those who chose not to be with us.
“If the victory is ours, it will be a trust to unite the people, restore the country and build a prosperous future for everyone,”Ahmad Zahid said.
The Umno president also said the 16th General Election should be expedited as this is what the people want.
“This is not a demand, nor is it a hope.
“This is what the people want,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid added that the general election would be an opportunity for Umno to secure a mandate to lead the country again.
The Umno president also invoked the Malay proverb “alang-alang menyeluk pekasam, biar sampai ke pangkal lengan”, saying the party should see the fight through to the end.
“Since we have already chosen to fight, then let us fight. Fight on and fight until we win,” Ahmad Zahid said.
