A groundswell of trust must accompany 'Blue Wave' to bring Umno continued victory, says Noraini

KUALA LUMPUR: The "Blue Wave" alone will not be enough to keep Umno on a winning streak as it must be matched by a "Wave of Trust" from the people, says Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.

She said she did not want the party to win simply because voters were angry with other political parties or because its opponents made mistakes.

"I want us to win because the people have regained their trust in us.

"If we want this Blue Wave to carry through to the general election and bring Barisan Nasional and Umno victory, it must be backed by the people’s trust," she said in her policy speech at the Wanita Umno assembly at the World Trade Centre here on Thursday (Sept 10).

Noraini said electoral victory may be decided at the ballot box, but winning voters’ confidence begins much earlier, when an individual chooses to trust the party.

"One person brings their family along. One family will influence another. Little by little, that trust spreads and grows.

"But trust cannot be forced. It cannot be bought. And it cannot be demanded," she stressed.

Noraini said Umno could not expect voters to support the party simply because of its past contributions.

"We cannot tell the people, 'Trust us because of what we have done for you in the past.'

"Yesterday’s contributions give us our history. The work we do today earns us trust. That is why we must give the people a reason to trust us again.

"They must believe that we understand their concerns... that we are willing to defend their interests (and)... that Umno has the answers for their future," she said.

The "Blue Wave", from the dark blue of the Barisan Nasional logo, refers to the coalition and Umno's recent victories in the Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections.
