Teen claims trial to attempted murder charge over Air Itam armed riot

GEORGE TOWN: A 19-year-old man claimed trial at the Sessions Court here on Wednesday (Sept 9) to an attempted murder charge of allegedly ramming a car into a 25-year-old man during an armed riot involving two Gang 04 groups in Air Itam last month.

Lim Boon Sik was charged before Sessions Court judge Juraidah Abbas with an offence under Section 307 of the Penal Code.

He was charged with intentionally causing injury to Yeap Jhun Ee, 25, using a car on Jalan Paya Terubong 3 at about 12.30am on Aug 29.

The charge alleged that the act was committed with the intention of causing an injury that could possibly result in Yeap's death.

The offence under Section 307 for attempted murder is punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine, or up to 20 years if hurt is caused to the victim.

Lim, who opted to have the proceedings conducted in Hokkien, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.

His lawyer, who declined to be named, sought a lower bail, submitting that the accused was young, his parents were present in court and he had been cooperative with police throughout the investigation.

The lawyer also submitted that Lim posed no flight risk and had undertaken not to interfere with witnesses in the case, while citing several previous cases involving similar offences.

The court then allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety.

Lim was also ordered to report to the nearest police station once a month and not to interfere with any eyewitnesses in the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Anuarul Hakim Abdul Muen prosecuted the case.

Juraidah set Oct 7 for the submission of documents.
