MELAKA: The Melaka state government has approved a 929-square-meter site to serve as a permanent facility for Hindu final rites.
Melaka MIC chairman Datuk V.P. Shanmugam announced the decision on Tuesday (Sept 8).
"This is a historic moment for the community as the state government has listened to our plight and resolved an issue that has remained unsettled for decades," said Shanmugam, who is also the state Youth, Sports, and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman. "Families will no longer have to endure the added distress of searching for ad hoc locations while mourning."
Shanmugam expressed gratitude to Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh for approving the land within the historic city.
Initial development at the site will be handled by the Public Works Department and the Melaka Historic City Council. The first phase of construction will include three gazebos to accommodate families during rituals before the venue becomes fully operational.
