PETALING JAYA: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did not attend the 72nd PAS Muktamar in Pengkalan Chepa, Kota Baru.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said an invitation was extended to Ahmad Zahid but his appearance was cancelled due to unavoidable matters at the last minute.
"He was represented by Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, which shows a determined effort to make the agenda to unite the ummah a success.
"The effort to unite Muslims should be based on peace, love and responsibility rather than driven by ego or political interests," he said, as quoted by Sinar Harian on Friday (Sept 4).
Kelantan Umno chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub and other state division leaders also attended the meeting.
This was the second time Umno leaders made an appearance at a PAS muktamar after Pahang in 2019.
The invitation was seen as recognising Umno as a strategic partner, said the report.
