SUNGAI SIPUT: Police are still working to establish the motive behind the murder of a foreign woman whose body was found tied up and stuffed inside a bag in Sungai Perak near the Lembah Jetty in Kuala Kangsar.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said preliminary forensic findings indicated that the victim was believed to be in her 30s and was not Malaysian.
“As for the motive, we have yet to determine it. We have sent several specimens from the victim to the forensic department.
“The cause of death has been classified as murder and we have opened an investigation paper under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” he told a press conference at the Sungai Siput police headquarters here on Wednesday (Sept 2).
Comm Mohd Alwi said police believed the woman had drowned after being tied up, placed inside a bag and thrown into the river.
“We believe that is what happened,” he said.
It was earlier reported that the body was found inside a bag near Dataran Lembah Jetty in Kuala Kangsar at about 4pm on Aug 14.
Police believe the victim was a foreign national as no BCG vaccination scar was found on her body, while a fingerprint check by the Perak National Registration Department returned no matching records.
Separately, Comm Mohd Alwi said police would investigate allegations of gambling-related activities at several premises in Taiping and Bukit Gantang.
“We will conduct an investigation. For your information, action has previously been taken against some of these premises.
“If such activities are still detected, further action will be taken,” he said.
His remarks came after Bukit Gantang division head Mohammad Sollehin Mohamad Tajie raised the matter in a Facebook post.
He urged the authorities to investigate the claims and clarify the matter if the information was incorrect, or shut down the premises and take action if illegal gambling activities were uncovered.
