A WOMAN had trouble walking after being punished with 200 squats for failing to meet work targets despite being in the job for barely two months, Oriental Daily reported.
Identified as Yang, she had joined an IT company in Hangzhou, China, in June as a financing consultant earning 4,500 yuan (RM2,700) a month.
She was ordered to do 100 squats each for failing to meet two work targets in late July.
Yang said she could barely stand or walk afterwards. She did not seek immediate treatment because she could not afford it, but went to hospital on Aug 2 after her urine became noticeably darker.
She was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle injury.
The company manager, identified as Zhang, acknowledged using squats as punishment violated labour laws.
He said he had not expected 200 squats to result in such consequences and later paid 300 yuan (RM180) for her medical expenses.
Yang is now seeking 15,000 yuan (RM9,000) in compensation.

The boy and a five-year-old girl, who were not known to each other, apparently argued over a game facility.
Liang allegedly slapped the girl, prompting the girl’s mother, identified as Xu, to confront her.
A fight then broke out among the three women – Liang, Wu and Xu – who were all later arrested by the police.
> A Taiwanese doctor has warned against drinking less water just to avoid using the bathroom, the daily also reported.
Gynaecologist Dr Hsieh Hsiao-yun shared the case of a woman whose bladder capacity had shrunk to less than 100ml after consuming less than a litre of water a day to avoid frequent toilet trips.
A normal bladder can hold about 300ml to 500ml.
Dr Hsieh stressed that drinking less water is not a solution for avoiding frequent urination.
She said people should hydrated and not hold their urine unnecessarily for too long.
