KUCHING: Sarawak will proceed with plans to carry out cloud seeding although the haze situation has improved following rainfall in the last few days, says Datuk Douglas Uggah.
The Deputy Premier said the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee was still coordinating with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) on the cloud seeding operation, as hydroelectricity dam levels remained low.
"The weather is good but we have a report from Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) that the water level at hydro (reservoirs) is still quite low. Nadma will look at the circumstances to see when we can carry out the cloud seeding," he told reporters after handing over cheques from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to non-Muslim houses of worship here on Tuesday (Aug 18).
Uggah also said several rural areas continued to face water supply problems despite the recent rain.
He said divisional disaster management committees have been instructed to be alert and deliver water to affected communities within 24 hours of receiving a complaint.
However, he said he had received some reports that the committees might not be able to deliver water on time.
As such, Uggah advised the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) to plan a strategy to address water shortages during prolonged hot and dry weather.
"We are very concerned about water supply," he said.
