MELAKA: A RM4.9mil consignment of chemical precursors, believed to be used for the production of synthetic drugs, was seized after maritime authorities found it abandoned along Klebang beach here.
The 67 bottles of suspected controlled chemicals, packed in six boxes and wrapped in black plastic, were discovered during a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) routine patrol on Tuesday night.
Melaka and Negri Sembilan MMEA director Maritime Kpt Salehuddin Zakaria said the discovery marked the agency’s second seizure involving substances linked to drug production.
He said enforcement personnel spotted the boxes during patrol.
“An inspection uncovered 67 bottles containing chemical liquids believed to be precursors used in the production of synthetic drugs.
“The seized substances are estimated to be worth nearly RM4.9mil on the black market,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Salehuddin said no arrests were made during the operation.
“We believe those responsible abandoned the consignment after becoming aware of the presence of enforcement personnel.”
He said the entire consignment had been taken to the Melaka and Negri Sembilan MMEA office.
The case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Poisons Act 1952.
Salehuddin said the agency would step up patrols and intelligence-gathering efforts, while strengthening strategic cooperation with other security agencies to combat smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
He also urged fishermen and coastal communities to promptly report any suspicious activity at sea.
