PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to officially launch the Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA) soon, with construction of the new hub already underway, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Speaking at a press conference at the ministry's headquarters on Thursday (Aug 13), Loke said the project, a joint venture between Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), will significantly expand the existing air cargo hub and boost its capacity.
"Construction of the logistics hub is already underway," Loke said. "We will be launching it soon and have invited the Prime Minister to officiate the project between MAHB and PDC."
Loke noted that PILA will enhance Penang’s air cargo facilities and reinforce its status as the primary logistics hub for the northern region. He added that MAHB also plans to upgrade air cargo infrastructure across other key facilities nationwide, including KL International Airport (KLIA).
The development follows Penang securing planning approval on April 27 for the 42-hectare logistics aeropark in Batu Maung, located adjacent to Penang International Airport (PIA).
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow previously stated that PILA will strengthen the state’s overall logistics ecosystem and support long-term industrial growth across northern Peninsular Malaysia.
