BJCK is a non-governmental organisation based in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, that provides educational support and holistic development programmes to over 150 underserved and marginalised children and youths aged seven to 18 years old.
Its dedicated learning centre is supported by 18 educators, who provide structured learning opportunities in a safe and supportive environment.
Following the first WCTGives “Brightening Lives” initiative in 2024, which provided educational resources and upgraded key facilities at the learning centre, the second phase extended WCT’s support through the refurbishment of BJCK’s common access areas from the ground floor to the first floor.
WCT contributed approximately RM34,000 towards upgrading the centre’s main entrance, staircase, storeroom and lighting facilities.
The works included improvements to enhance safety and visibility, optimise storage space, incorporate pest-control features and ensure that access routes and emergency exits remain clear and unobstructed.
As part of the refurbishment, two murals were also added along the entrance area to complement the physical improvements and create a more vibrant and engaging environment for the BJCK community.
WCT group managing director Datuk Lee Tuck Fook said, "At WCT, we believe that meaningful support begins with understanding the needs of the communities we serve.
“Through WCTGives “Brightening Lives” 2.0, we are pleased to continue supporting Buku Jalanan Chow Kit by helping to create an environment where children can learn and grow with greater confidence.
“This initiative reflects the purpose of our WCTGives #EducationforAll pillar and our commitment to making education more accessible and inclusive.”
To mark the completion of the upgrading works, WCT Holdings Bhd chief operating officer (property development) Chong Wah Hing, officiated the handover ceremony at BJCK’s learning centre.
The ceremony formalised the handover of the improved facilities to the BJCK community.
Chong said, “A safe, accessible and functional environment plays an important role in supporting children’s daily activities and learning experience.
“Through “Brightening Lives” 2.0, we upgraded key common areas at BJCK’s learning centre to provide greater comfort and convenience for students, educators and visitors.
“We hope these improvements will support BJCK in its continued efforts to nurture and educate the children in its care.”
Buku Jalanan Chow Kit co-founder and head of strategic direction Siti Rahayu Baharin said: “Every child deserves a safe and supportive environment in which to learn, grow and be recognised for their potential.
“The upgraded entrance and common areas represent more than physical improvements; they reflect a shared commitment to creating a place where our students feel welcomed and encouraged to pursue their aspirations.
“We hope this space continues to inspire hope, confidence and a sense of belonging among the children and the wider BJCK community.”
“Brightening Lives” 2.0 forms part of WCTGives’ #EducationforAll pillar, which supports initiatives that improve access to learning and create more inclusive opportunities for underserved communities.
Launched in 2022, WCTGives also advances community well-being and environmental stewardship through its #WeCareTogether and #AGreenerTomorrow pillars.
