KOTA KINABALU: A thorough investigation must be done on the security procedures at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), says Putatan MP Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.
He said the arrest of three women at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta on Monday (Aug 3) raises the question of how they could have passed the security checks when leaving through KKIA.
“When you enter the checkpoint, you get scanned, and occasionally a general pat-down from the airport security officials,” Shahelmey said.
Shahelmey said this required the full commitment from airport authorities, police, immigration and customs officials to tackle and prevent together.
“We need answers as to how the suspects could have bypassed so many levels of security checks just to be arrested in Jakarta for bringing in drugs,” he stressed.
Earlier, staff at Terminal 2F of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport had foiled an attempt by three female passengers to bring in drugs hidden in their luggage and shoes after they arrived on a flight from Kota Kinabalu.
It was reported that they had been found with, among other things, cocaine, MDMA or ecstasy, and tobacco filled with ketamine, all under 20g.
This follows a series of drug busts involving Malaysians abroad over the past few days.
