‘Protect intellectual property through patents’

ALOR GAJAH: Participants of the National TVET Innovation Competition have been urged to register copyrights or patents for their inventions to protect intellectual property and strengthen the competitiveness of local innovations.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim said the step is crucial to ensure every innovation receives proper protection and opens opportunities for commercialisation.

“Awareness of patents needs to be maintained at a high level. Once an idea is developed, the next step is to patent it, so it becomes the innovator’s intellectual property.

“Patenting an innovation does not mean limiting its use to oneself. It ensures the value and competitiveness of the innovation are preserved,” he told reporters after closing the national-level competition at Masjid Tanah Community College yesterday, Bernama reported.

Adam Adli said the competition, themed ‘Agentic AI in Innovation’, could serve as a catalyst for developing artificial intelligence (AI)-based innovations.

He said participants increasingly understand AI applications in solving real-world issues, including the development of a rail passenger density monitoring system with potential for further development by industry players.

“We hope participants will continue protecting their innovations through intellectual property registration and foster industry collaboration to open up commercialisation opportunities for developed ideas,” he said.
