Shafie files appeal against contempt conviction, remains Semporna MP

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal will continue serving as Semporna MP while appealing his contempt of court conviction.

"The court delivered its decision in the contempt proceedings against me, and I respect the court's decision," Shafie said on Wednesday (July 29).

"I have instructed my lawyers to file an appeal and will allow the legal process to take its course."

"My duty to the people remains unchanged," the former Sabah chief minister added, explaining that the issue was about a young girl whose tragic death touched the hearts and conscience of the nation.

Shafie said his intention has always been to uphold truth, seek justice and strengthen public confidence in public institutions.

He declined to comment further as the case is before the appellate court, but pledged to continue carrying out his duties with humility, integrity and respect for the rule of law.

Shafie was sentenced on Wednesday to five weeks' jail over remarks regarding the Zara Qairina death inquest last year.

The court granted a stay of execution pending an appeal to the High Court.

Warisan secretary-general Datuk Loretto Padua Jr urged party leaders and members to focus on party work and continue fighting for justice in the country.
