Extortion probe on 12 cops shows PDRM won't tolerate internal misconduct, says Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: The arrest of 12 policemen for the alleged extortion of RM2mil from a foreign national shows that the police force does not compromise on internal misconduct, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail says.

"The police have caught (the suspects), detained them and taken action.

"That is a strong and clear message that the force will not compromise on the issue at all, even with its own personnel," he said after the Home Ministry's monthly assembly here on Monday (July 27).

It was reported earlier that police are investigating 12 officers for allegedly extorting RM2mil from a foreign national.

It is learnt that the victim was released after paying US$140,000 (RM572,669) to the suspects.

The victim later lodged a report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, prompting an internal investigation.

Sources said the group allegedly demanded RM2mil from the victim, but he managed to pay only a portion of the amount.

When contacted, Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam confirmed the case.
