Anxious moments for 19 passengers after bus crashes into jeep near Pekan

KUANTAN: A total of 19 passengers were in a panic after the bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident at KM77 Jalan Kuantan-Segamat near Runchang, Pekan Friday (July 24).

Pekan OCPD Supt Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the accident at about 4pm occurred when the 53-year-old bus driver and the passengers involved from Kolej Vokasional Muadzam Shah were heading to a hotel in the town to attend a retirement ceremony.

He said initial investigations found that a car driven by a 36-year-old man from the direction of Gemas, Negri Sembilan, heading towards Kuantan had suddenly stopped because there was a traffic jam due to a fallen tree on the road.

"A jeep driven by a 40-year-old man who was behind the car also stopped before the bus from the same direction hit the back of the jeep and skidded to the left of the road," he said in a statement.

He said that as a result of the accident, the bus driver suffered injuries to his hand and was receiving treatment at the Muadzam Shah Hospital while the other passengers were not hurt.

Mohd Zaidi said the case was being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - Bernama
