TAWAU: A newborn girl was found abandoned in bushes near a house in Kampung Jawa here early Tuesday (July 21).
The infant was discovered at about 6am by a man who then alerted the authorities.
Acting Tawau OCPD Supt Wilynton Enchana Watt said police received two reports on the discovery.
"The baby has been taken to Hospital Tawau for a medical examination and further treatment," he said in a statement.
He said police were in the process of identifying the mother and anyone who had a part in abandoning the baby.
Investigators were also looking for witnesses and obtaining closed-circuit television footage from around the area.
"Checks will also be conducted with nearby hospitals and health clinics to assist investigations," Supt Wilynton said.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for the abandonment of a child below the age of 12.
