MELAKA: A total of 277 workplace accidents resulting in permanent and temporary disabilities across various sectors were recorded in Melaka during the first six months of this year.
Melaka Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH) director Ramesh Zakir Shamsul said that, during the same period, three workplace fatalities – two in the construction sector and one in the manufacturing sector – were also recorded.
"So far, workplace accident cases reported in the state remain relatively under control, but DOSH is always monitoring the operations of industries or companies to ensure employers and employees comply with stipulated occupational safety and health procedures.
"Employers are responsible for reporting every workplace accident, and detailed investigations will be conducted under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514),” he said here today.
He said this after the launch of the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB)-level 2026 Occupational Safety and Health Week celebration, which was officiated by state deputy senior executive councillor for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin.
Also present were Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman and DOSH deputy director-general (Occupational Health) Ahmad Jailani Mansor.
Ramesh Zakir said Melaka DOSH remains committed to collaborating with various parties, such as employers and local authorities in the state, including MBMB, through the organisation of various programmes such as workshops and talks on occupational safety and health.
"Efforts to raise awareness on occupational safety and health should not rest solely with DOSH, as employers also play a crucial role. For example, MBMB has greatly assisted in promoting these efforts through various programmes,” he said. – Bernama
