SEREMBAN: Activist Tamim Dahari Abdul Razak has surrendered to the police after he was believed to have fled to a neighbouring country a few months ago, says Dep Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad.
The state chief police officer said Tamim Dahari surrendered at the Port Dickson police station at around 12.45pm Saturday (July 18).
"He gave him self up after being away for four months. He had re-entered Malaysia illegally through Kelantan," he said in a statement.
DCP Alzafny said police had been looking for him following a report lodged by a man claiming that an individual named Tamim Dahari had threatened him on Facebook.
He said police tried looking for the suspect in Kajang, Selangor but could not locate him.
A police probe later revealed that the suspect fled to Thailand via Bukit Kayu Hitam on March 9.
The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities or network services.
DCP Alzafny said Tamim Dahari will be taken to court Sunday (July 19) to be remanded.
In March, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police were working with their Thai counterparts to bring Tamim Dahari back after he was believed to have fled there.
Tamim, he said, was being investigated for allegedly vandalising a "soolam", a sacred symbol in Hinduism, at the former Sri Maha Muniswarar Temple in Langkawi, Kedah.
Khalid said the Attorney-General's Chambers had ordered for Tamim Dahari to be charged with the relevant offences.
