JB court postpones murder proceedings after Myanmar man fails to understand charge

JOHOR BARU: The Magistrate's Court here postponed charging a Myanmar man with murder after finding the accused did not understand Bahasa Malaysia.

The 38-year-old suspect said he did not understand the charge against him after it was read out by a court interpreter before Magistrate Nabilah Nizam here on Thursday (July 16).

Nabilah then fixed Aug 4 for the suspect to be charged pending the appointment of an interpreter.

The accused allegedly murdered a 33-year-old fellow countryman along Jalan Perdagangan 3, Taman Universiti here, between 11.30pm and 11.45pm on June 27.

According to police, the victim was found lying in a pool of blood in front of a shoplot in Taman Universiti at about 2.27am on June 28.

He was rushed to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for treatment but died on July 4 after eight days.

A post-mortem found that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, prompting police to reclassify the investigation from voluntarily causing grievous hurt to murder.

They subsequently arrested several suspects in Johor, Melaka and Kuala Lumpur.
