KUALA LUMPUR: The National Unity Ministry has launched two five-year strategic plans (2026–2030) to modernise the Museums Department through digital transformation, including the integration of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
Officiated by National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang at Muzium Negara on Wednesday (July 15), the initiatives comprise the main Strategic Plan and a dedicated Digitalisation Strategic Plan. The digitalisation roadmap features seven strategies, 21 programs, and 55 sub-programs aligned with the government's broader digital agenda.
To ensure accountability, the ministry is introducing the Policy Impact Assessment (PIA) Rubric—a framework designed to systematically measure the effectiveness of each initiative.
"This is part of an ongoing government-wide transformation to modernise our institutions," Aaron told reporters.
Key upcoming projects include the creation of a National Database of Heritage Artefact Collections to consolidate museum data nationwide, alongside new immersive digital exhibitions.
Malaysian Museums Department Director-General Datuk Kamarul Baharin A. Kasim revealed that two VR experiences are already in development. Visitors will soon be able to experience a simulation of the 1957 Proclamation of Independence at Stadium Merdeka, as well as an underground tin mining simulation at the Sungai Lembing Museum.
