IPOH: A new milestone in strengthening Malaysia’s security capabilities was created with the official opening of the Sultan Nazrin Shah 69 Commando Camp in Ulu Kinta here by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

Present at the event were Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Raja Muda Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, and Raja Di Hilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Sultan Idris Shah.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail were also present at the event yesterday.

In his speech, Saifuddin Nasution said the new headquarters of the 69 Commando Unit reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s security capabilities in the face of increasingly complex and dynamic threats.

He said the facility symbolises the government’s continued investment in providing world-class infrastructure and training facilities to ensure the country’s elite security forces remain fully prepared to defend Malaysia’s peace and sovereignty.

He added that Malaysia’s latest ranking of 12th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index was a testament to the dedication and readiness of the country’s security forces.

“The 69 Commando had built a distinguished record since its establishment in 1969, playing key roles in major security operations, including the fight against the communist insurgency, the Al-Ma’unah incident in 2000, Ops Daulat in Lahad Datu in 2013, and Malaysia’s special assignment after the MH17 tragedy in 2014.

“The unit was also instrumental in counter terrorism operations, hostage rescue missions and responding to high-risk security threats, consistently serving on the frontlines whenever the nation’s sovereignty and security were challenged,” he said in his speech yesterday.

Saifuddin Nasution said the government has invested over RM206mil to develop the 338ha camp.

“The camp, which was handed over to the police in 2024, comprises modern training, operational and administrative facilities designed to support the unit’s long-term development.

“The camp is a strategic national investment, and it would serve as a catalyst for enhancing the 69 Commando’s capabilities for decades to come,” he added.

He also paid tribute to serving personnel and veterans of the 69 Commando for their sacrifices and dedication, expressing confidence that the camp would become a lasting symbol of the unit’s excellence, courage and commitment to safeguarding the nation’s peace, security and sovereignty.
