Decision expected soon on Freedom of Information Bill, says Kulasegaran

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed Freedom of Information Bill is awaiting Cabinet consideration and a decision is expected soon, says Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran.

“The work has more or less been completed and I understand we are now waiting for the matter to be considered by the Cabinet," he said.

He noted that the Bill would be tabled at the Cabinet on Wednesday (July 8) and a decision would be known very soon. He said this while winding up the debate on the Suhakam 2024 annual report and financial statements in the Dewan Rakyat.

Kulasegaran said the government remains committed to introducing the Freedom of Information Bill as part of its institutional reform agenda.

He said the Legal Affairs Division began nationwide stakeholder engagement in 2019, involving about 2,500 participants.

The government also conducted a public survey involving about 8,000 respondents to gather views on the proposed law, he added.

Kulasegaran said the government had approved the policy for the Freedom of Information Act in 2025 and established a pro tem task force to oversee the drafting of the legislation.
