Grenade deaths at Kem Hobart has not affected ops or training, says Armed Forces chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The recent grenade explosion at Kem Hobart, Kedah, which claimed the lives of two soldiers, has not affected military operations or training activities.

Armed Forces chief Jeneral Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman said operations and training at the camp would continue as usual despite the incidents.

He said the Army was reviewing whether there was room to improve its standard operating procedures (SOPs) for training, as well as monitoring mechanisms and facilities at the camp.

"We are looking at whether there is room to improve the SOPs for the exercise. We are also reviewing the facilities and monitoring at Kem Hobart to ensure any necessary improvements are implemented," he told reporters on Tuesday (July 7).

He was speaking after the launch of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2027 (LIMA'27) here.

Malek Razak said investigations into the incident were still ongoing, but the findings could not be disclosed until the process had been completed.

He said the Armed Forces was currently focused on the welfare of the families of the deceased soldiers, including ensuring that all entitlements and assistance due to them were provided.

"All matters relating to the deceased personnel have been managed according to their entitlements. I personally visited the family in Alor Setar last Saturday (July 4) and met his wife," he said.

He added that although the personnel had passed away, his family remains part of the Army family, and they will continue to support them.

On June 16, two Malaysian Army personnel were killed in a grenade explosion during a live-fire training exercise at a firing range.

A second incident occurred on June 29, when two more soldiers sustained knee injuries. They were struck by fragments believed to have ricocheted following a technical malfunction involving a machine gun during a training exercise.
