Football player dies mid-game from apparent lightning strike

ALOR GAJAH: A footballer was believed to have been killed by a lightning strike during a friendly match at Padang Kompleks Rakan Muda Lendu here.

Alor Gajah police chief Supt Ahmad Abu Bakar said R. Thanesh, 28, was confirmed dead in the 5.40pm incident on Sunday, with the match referee injured.

He said police received information from Hospital Alor Gajah about a man brought in unconscious.

He said 10 minutes into the game between Rembau Indian Veteran FC and Tanjung Minyak FC, it began to drizzle and a clap of thunder caused three individuals to collapse on the field.

“The victim was taken to hospital in a private vehicle while the referee was sent to hospital by ambulance.

“The other person did not suffer injuries,” he said when contacted, Bernama reported.

Supt Ahmad said the victim’s body was sent to Hospital Melaka for a post-mortem with the case classified as sudden death.
