PETALING JAYA: The new base medical and health insurance/takaful (MHIT) plan will be known as MediAsas, the Finance Ministry said.
The plan, under the Joint Ministerial Committee on Private Healthcare Costs (JBMKKS), will also commence its pilot phase at the end of the month.
“The MediAsas pilot programme which will commence at the end July, marks a further milestone in preparing the ground for nationwide implementation in January 2027.
“MediAsas is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping private healthcare financing and supporting broader long-term healthcare transformation,” it said in a statement on Monday (July 6).
A nationwide rollout is also expected to start next year January.
The statement, quoting Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, added that MediAsas will provide a firm foundation to support longer term healthcare financing reforms.
“Through broader eligibility criteria and distinct product features, MediAsas is designed to be affordable over time and expands access to medical protection for a wider segment of Malaysians,” it said.
"The programme will be offered as a standalone medical insurance and takaful protection plan. It will also comprise two products: MediAsas Teras as the standard plan and MediAsas Fleksi as a “standard-plus” plan.
“MediAsas will provide protection for individuals up to 85 years of age,” it said.
Plans are also in place for an independent governance board to provide ongoing oversight and protect consumer interests.
Aside from the implementation of MediAsas the JBMKKS will also continue other initiatives to strengthen the private healthcare ecosystem, including enhancing billing transparency through closer collaboration among private hospitals, insurers, takaful operators and regulators.
