Malaysia reaffirms counter-terrorism commitment at high-level UN conference

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry has strengthened Malaysia's commitment on the global stage through the active participation of the country's delegation in the Fourth United Nations (UN) High-Level Conference on Countering Terrorism at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The Home Ministry said that the Malaysian delegation, led by deputy secretary-general (security) Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman, also delivered the country's official intervention statement during Session III: The Global Terrorism Threat Landscape.

"During the session, Abdul Halim firmly presented Malaysia's strategic views on the dynamics of today's security threats.

"This not only underscored ministry's credibility but also demonstrated Malaysia's role in advancing an inclusive and progressive national security narrative that is aligned with the principles of Malaysia MADANI at the international level," it said in a statement Thursday (July 2).

It said Abdul Halim also delivered Malaysia's National Statement at the UN General Assembly Hall in New York on Wednesday (July 1) under Agenda Item 118: Report of the UN Secretary-General on the Ninth Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

"The session highlighted Malaysia's unwavering commitment to supporting multilateral efforts to combat extremism.

"At this highest platform, he outlined the country's holistic approach, aligning domestic security strategies with the global framework and emphasising the importance of international cooperation centred on justice and lasting peace to ensure the long-term effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts," it added.

It said that the ministry's Public Security and Order Division secretary, Datuk Zulkifli Abidin, and its principal assistant secretary, Elina Roslim, also shared Malaysia's expertise as global panellists during Side Event 16.

The side event, themed "Localised and Whole-of-Society Approaches in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism", saw both officials present Malaysia's successful practical modules on building youth resilience, strengthening community partnerships and the process of social reintegration.

The conference brought together world security leaders to strengthen strategic leadership and promote a multi-stakeholder approach towards a future free from the threat of terrorism. - Bernama
